LSUK branch ends up in Casualty!
LSUK’s Bristol branch finds the right place to recuperate
Having been badly damaged by a recent fire, the Bristol branch of nationwide automotive parts supplier LSUK is making a great recovery thanks to everybody at Holby City hospital!
In the fire – which was ironically caused by a short-circuit in a customers car being stored inside the premises overnight – the Short Street building was severely effected, directly by the fire in the garage and by smoke damage elsewhere. In addition to a number of vehicles being destroyed, the branch also had to contend with the loss of more than £150K worth of stock, about half the overall value.
However, the Bristol branch is obviously not one to be deterred by the mere inconvenience of a fire, and following some good old-fashioned hard graft by all the staff, the intrepid team were up a running the very next day.
Although the branch was open, there was obviously much work to be done to make the branch truly fit for purpose and over the last couple of weeks the full force of the LSUK operation has sprung into action. It has now constructed a temporary fabricated steel workshop on the fire-damaged site and has also secured an industrial unit for parts storage and the trade sales counter, only a mile and a half from the existing site and which is immediately next door to the film set for BBC TV’s ‘Casualty’.
Despite the distractions of the fire – and the nurses! – LSUK Bristol branch manager Steve House said: “The whole team have been outstanding. They have rallied around to support the business in very challenging circumstances and despite these difficulties, the branch is still trading well.”
One interesting result of the fire, has been a sharp increase in the take up of LSUK’s latest service offering, On-Site Service (OSS). The OSS initiative provides customers with LSUK’s vast installation, diagnostic and service/repair expertise, but delivered direct to their own premises.
Commenting on this Steve said: “The fast rate of growth for this service in Bristol is a direct result of the fire and its brilliant that we have a service that can relieve the pressure of the temporarily reduced capacity at our workshop, with an equally good service which we can take to our customers own site.”

LSUK looking good with Dickies clothing
LSUK and Dickies clothing tie-up distribution agreement
LSUK is pleased to announce that it has been appointed as a national distributor for the automotive sector of the legendary workwear brand Dickies.
Dickies clothing has become synonymous with tough and durable workwear around the world, tested in some of the world’s harshest working conditions.
Nick Silivestros, corporate sales manager for Dickies is very pleased by the new deal. “I’m delighted about this collaboration with LSUK and I’m certain that our relationship will be very successful.
“Dickies is the last word in everyday workwear. The detailed knowledge of different industries and working environments is evident to anyone who has worn our products. The whole range combines durability, performance, comfort and value for money.”
LSUK’s head of business development, Nigel Rodgers, believes the company’s distribution agreement with Dickies makes sense.
“As a provider of technical expertise – as well as a supplier of quality parts – LSUK is already a market leader within the UK automotive and industrial sectors, so to join forces with such a respected clothing company like Dickies is a logical step for everyone,” he said.
As part of the agreement, all 53 of LSUK’s branches will now stock the market-leading workwear. Products available under the arrangement include protective gloves, hats and overalls as well as high visibility jackets, helmets, safety footwear and tool bags.

LSUK delivers the ‘Works’ at Bristol airport
Automotive specialist leads the way with new technology
Nationwide parts and service provider LSUK is helping Bristol International Airport deliver significant fuel savings following the fitment of the latest TomTom Works vehicle tracking and fleet management system.
The system is fitted to 21 of Bristol’s various airside service vehicles, through an innovative LINK 300 ‘black box’, which interacts with a Webfleet web-based software package. This has allowed the transport management staff to collect important data that has led to significant efficiencies in fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle usage.
Analysis of the data provided by the system has allowed the airport fleet management to focus on where improvements can be made to the routes and the way that passengers are transported between the car parks and the terminal buildings and between the terminal and the awaiting aircraft. It also identifies periods of excessive engine idling, which now allows staff to inform the driver to switch off the vehicle, rather than burn unnecessary fuel.
As a result, the airport is able to both refine the routes taken by the airside buses and reduce the overall mileage they cover and the fuel they use, which not only saves money but also contributes to a cleaner environment. Without this data, it was virtually impossible to understand where engine use could be reduced and therefore how fuel savings could be made.
Jane Currie, LSUK’s account manager said: “Bristol International is the first airport in the UK to embrace this technology. It enables the airport to make more efficient use of its vehicles by ensuring optimum passenger loadings and improving route efficiency and could very effectively be employed at any large airport.”
Steve Webb, Motor Transport Manager at Bristol International Airport, said: “A major area of energy consumption is the diesel used by our vehicles on the ground. As well as the environmental benefits of reducing the amount of fuel we use, there are also significant cost savings – especially important in these days of high fuel costs!”

Building on first-year SED show success
LSUK will return to the SED Show from May 13-15 and will use the popular national construction event as a platform to launch the second edition of its 'Monster Products' directory.
With a product portfolio that has been developed exclusively to cater for the needs of the heavy plant and construction sectors, this year's SED Show - held at the 55,000-seat Rockingham Motor Speedway in Northamptonshire - will form an integral part of LSUK's 2008 promotional activities.
LSUK has a network of 53 branches strategically positioned around the UK and is capable of delivering a slick supply of spare parts and technical expertise to both large and small vehicle operators and businesses.
"We exhibited at SED for the first time last year and it was an excellent tool for raising awareness about what we can offer this market sector. LSUK's Trafford Park branch scoops top honour
Exemplary service nets AA 'Branch of the Year' award for Manchester team
Staff at LSUK's Trafford Park branch in Manchester are celebrating after scooping the latest 'AA Branch of the Year' award.
Through its network of 53 branches, LSUK is responsible for supplying all of the parts and equipment that are found on every vehicle in The AA's extensive fleet.
The 'Branch of the Year' award is judged on sales per head and the feedback that is given to The AA's area managers from the patrols that serve the nation's motorists.
Speaking about Trafford Park's success, LSUK's AA account director, Steve Cambridge, said: "The branch has a dedicated person to look after The AA patrols and that has enabled it to deliver an extremely good service in a catchment area that is extensive.
"The feedback that has come back about Trafford Park has been very positive and shows that the staff there are prepared to go the extra mile for The AA - something that is extremely pleasing."
Branch manager Chris Taylor said: "We're conscious of the fact that The AA is a hugely important customer to LSUK so we really try to make all of the patrols feel at home and let them use the branch and facilities as they please.
Patrolman Paul Harrison uses Trafford Park branch almost everyday and has parts delivered to his home as well as picking them up from the branch.
He said: "The service that the branch offers is fantastic and if they say they will do something, they always do it. I don't have to worry about anything when I'm dealing with Trafford Park because Chris and his team are very proactive and they always make sure the parts are on the shelf before I ask for them."
In addition to Trafford Park scooping the main award, there were a number of regional winners. These were Gateshead (Scotland and north), Chelmsford (south east), Tunbridge Wells (London) and Bournemouth (south west).

LSUK wins another vehicle spares supply contract
Strength of logistics network enables company to come out on top in competitive tender
LSUK, a national supplier of parts and technical expertise, has further strengthened its national accounts portfolio after being awarded the contract to supply Powys County Council with all of its vehicle spares for the next three years.
As a Unitary Authority that is responsible for all local services in the county, Powys employs 8,000 people and operates a large and varied fleet of vehicles from three depots in mid Wales.
LSUK came out on top in a recent competitive tender to meet the vehicle parts requirements of Powys County Council and has now started feeding parts into its vehicle depots from LSUK branches in Shrewsbury and Hereford.
"Powys were looking for a cost saving across the board and I'm pleased to say we were able to meet their requirements through our existing logistics network that is slick and efficient," explained LSUK's head of business development, Nigel Rodgers.
Another factor that proved instrumental in LSUK winning another local authority contract was that it is one of only a few national parts suppliers that hold a Procurement Card.
LSUK's national accounts portfolio totals more than 100 customers and includes some of the biggest organisations in the UK.

Attending Workshop 2008 gives us the perfect opportunity to meet the trade and to update them on the very latest equipment that's available and how it can benefit their business," explained Protech general manager, Chris Grimm. Back to top LSUK: 'We give our customers the best possible service'
LSUK has won a new customer, thanks largely to the exemplary service shown by staff at its Warwick branch.
As part of LSUK's commitment to national account customer, Amey Fleet Services, Warwick branch recently sent auto electrician Terry Dodd to the Modec manufacturing site in Coventry to fit various auxiliary equipment to the zero emission trucks that have been commissioned by Amey.
Modec was thrilled with the professionalism, attention to detail and integrity that Dodd showed when he was working in Coventry and this has been instrumental in Modec choosing LSUK as one of its technical partners for future projects.
"Modec is a manufacturer of specialist vehicles so to receive such positive feedback from them and to win more business on the back of it is extremely pleasing," LSUK's head of business development, Nigel Rodgers said.
"We're always striving to give our customers the best possible service and this sort of endorsement should serve as a reminder to everyone just what is possible when we put that little bit of extra effort in."

LSUK doubles its diesel capability Parts and technical expertise supplier invests in new test bench
LSUK has reacted to the continued boom in the diesel market by investing almost £70,000 in a new diesel test bench and expanding its diesel workshop space at Hastings.
Adding a second Bosch 815 bench and significantly increasing the workspace has doubled the capability of the LSUK branch network's central diesel hub and will help staff to cope with the increasing demand when it comes to testing common rail and VP pumps.
"I have been with the company for 35 years and I have to say this is the biggest investment that I've ever seen," said branch manager, Colin Coulman. "I have to take my hat off to the company because this kind of investment shows that it is serious about the future and wanting to position us at the forefront of the diesel market."
Coulman and his service manager, Mick Farman, anticipate the new test bench will enable them to offer an even better service to both the LSUK branch network and external customers and meet their diesel needs quicker.
Farman said: "With two Bosch benches, we can now use one solely for common rail injectors and the other solely for common rail pumps. That will enable us to work in batches and therefore offer an even more competitive service to all of our customers."

Diesel rush fuels LSUK investment
LSUK recently contributed to the pages of CAT Magazine, the automotive aftermarket's flagship trade magazine. In the page-long feature, commercial director, Shaun Darke, presented the company's views about diesel and highlighted the impressive steps it is taking to meet the market demand. This is how it went...
Ask any company director in the aftermarket how they feel about spending £70,000 on a new piece of equipment and nearly all will take a sharp intake of breath or respond by looking out of the nearest window and muttering: "lovely weather we're having at the moment, isn't it?"
The fact is investment can be a daunting prospect for any business because you're never quite sure of the return. We're no different at LSUK - except when it comes to further increasing our standing in the current UK diesel market. We recently spent £70,000 on an additional Bosch 815 test bench and we fully expect to add more benches in the not too distant future to meet the market demand.
The inspiration behind that level of investment is simple. Flick through the pages of this magazine and you're almost certain to come across at least one story or feature that boasts about the boom in the UK diesel market. With the latest SMMT figures stating that diesel cars accounted for 44% of new car sales in 2007, it's clear that opportunities for diesel repair are as high as the price per litre of diesel itself. That's the attraction.
As well as having a network of 53 branches throughout the UK, LSUK is unique in that we have set up two 'diesel repair hubs' in Kilmarnock and Hastings that cater specifically for the growing demand in the diesel repair market.
If a customer comes into one of our branches with a set of Bosch, Delphi, Nippon Denso common rail injectors or a specific VP pump, we have a system in place that means they will have a replacement within 48 hours. Once the fault is diagnosed at the central hub, the part is then repaired by one of our specialist diesel technicians and put back on to the shelf, as per a typical parts exchange programme.
By implementing this repair system, we have been able to strategically position ourselves as a company that can offer a nationwide diesel repair service to fleet operators. If a diesel breaks down anywhere in the UK, there will be an LSUK branch that can sort the problem out very quickly. That's the level of service that today's diesel market demands.
This is a feature of our business that has been warmly welcomed by The AA - the breakdown service that we supply with all of the parts, accessories and consumables that can be found on any of the vehicles in its large fleet. The AA loves the fact that if one of its members has a diesel problem, the patrolman can come to us and, together, we'll have the vehicle back on the road in no time. That's a great selling point for them and us in today's competitive marketplace.
A lot is made of the fact that the aftermarket is displaying a reluctance to get involved in diesel technology, but it doesn't surprise me at all. The common rail systems that can be found on today's cars are so advanced, it's staggering. Garage technicians need to have confidence in what they're doing and unless they're specifically trained in diesel, they're not going to touch it.
A few years ago, if a technician fitted a mechanical diesel pump to a vehicle and something went wrong, it ordinarily wouldn't hurt the car. But if something is fitted to a common rail vehicle and something unplanned happens, the results can be catastrophic. Let's not forget that common rail systems operate at such a high pressure that they can cause serious injury to whoever is responsible for fitting them - should something malfunction.
So, if you bear all of this in mind, it's logical for us to be making such a big investment in the diesel repair market. Although we've already got two central repair hubs, we very much want to extend our network even further but it's not quite as simple as just buying another test bench.
The workshop environment for diesel repairs has to almost be clinical so that there is zero chance of contamination. And that means businesses like ours have to find a specific type of workspace in which to put a diesel test bench. We're always looking for new areas in which we can expand our UK hub network and it will happen - sooner rather than later.
The diesel explosion is an exciting time for the aftermarket. The fact that the diesel vehicle parc has increased from zero to 44% in the seven years since the first common rail system was introduced in 2000, is nothing short of amazing.

LSUK helps to get UN vehicles ready for action
LSUK will continue to play a pivotal role in the preparation of United Nations vehicles in 2008, thanks to the level of service provided by its Chelmsford branch.
Toyota Gibraltar is responsible for modifying a range of vehicles for use by UN officials all around the world and LSUK provides critical parts - including rotating beacons, switches, work lamps, and side mounting plates.
"Our business with Toyota Gibraltar illustrates that LSUK is not just a strong national supplier of parts and technical expertise, but also an international player," LSUK commercial director, Shaun Darke, said. "The fact that we have been a supplier to such an important project in Gibralter for six years is testament to our logistics skills."
LSUK is hoping to play an even bigger part in helping to modify the 5,000 UN vehicles that are deployed around the world each year.
"This is already a significant piece of business for us but we are keen to take on new services with them," Chelmsford branch manager, Derren Mitchell, said. "Whatever the UN specifies for its vehicles, we are proud to say that we can supply it with speed and efficiency."

AA patrols visit new LSUK branch
Warwick branch employee brings the curtain down on his remarkable career
LSUK recently welcomed a number of AA patrols to its brand-new South Mimms branch as part of an initiative to highlight the capabilities at the new site.
As a respected supplier of parts and technical expertise to the automotive aftermarket, LSUK holds the contract to supply all of the vehicles in Britain's largest breakdown service with the parts, accessories, consumables, equipment, uniform items and stationary that are needed to keep the nation's motorists on the move.
LSUK's brand-new South Mimms branch is in a prime location in North London and sits on the edge of South Mimms Services - a bustling site that serves both the M25 and A1 motorways. Its opening takes the number of LSUK branches that are accessible to AA patrols to 53.
Staff at South Mimms welcomed around 42 patrols from in and around the London area to the new site during the open day and LSUK received a lot of positive feedback about its latest branch.
AA account manager, Laura Farr, said: "The patrols that visited us got a full insight into our stock holding, our waste facilities and, more importantly, our delivery service."
"John Cherry (AA area manager) and John Hanvey (AA technical support) were both very supportive of the open day and we appreciate them allowing patrols to be off the road at various times to make the day such a success. This kind of initiative will only strengthen the already outstanding relationship that we have with The AA."

Godfrey leaves LSUK after 63 years service
Warwick branch employee brings the curtain down on his remarkable career
LSUK bid a fond farewell to its longest-serving employee last month when Geoff Godfrey left Warwick branch after notching up an incredible 63 years of service.
Godfrey joined Avon Electrical Services (one of the companies that was amalgamated to eventually form LSUK) as a 14-year-old in 1945 and worked as a workshop engineer until he first retired in 1991. However, the draw of the business proved too much and he returned to work 12 months later as a part-time van driver - a position he held until the beginning of 2008.
"I had quite a few ups and downs during my 63 years but I've loved every minute of my time with the company," the 77-year-old explained. I really enjoyed meeting new people and the challenge of the workshop environment. I've got some excellent memories to take away with me."
Warwick branch manager, Chris Petch, described Godfrey as a "model employee", having worked with him for the last seven years.
"You could set your watch by Geoff's punctuality and all of the customers loved him to bits," he said. "His workshop background was a great asset as a van driver because he would regularly look at jobs for customers and was always bringing work back with him to the branch.
"It was a real pleasure to work with Geoff because he never complained, was always willing and never had any days off sick. He was definitely a model employee and a great asses to this branch and the LSUK business as a whole."

LSUK wins praise from The AA
The AA has commended LSUK for its performance during a recent supplier audit that involved 13 branches being put under the microscope.
LSUK is responsible for supplying all of the parts, equipment and accessories that can be found on the 2400-strong fleet of AA recovery vehicles that look after the UK's motorists.
As a regulated body, The AA has to demonstrate that all of its suppliers meet stringent standards when it comes to things like management procedures, order processing and the handling of waste products.
The audit took a month to complete and involved The AA's internal auditor and his team visiting 13 LSUK branches to assess their performance and the quality of their systems and procedures that are directly related to the servicing of The AA contract.
"An audit like this is very serious for any supplier because if there are serious shortfalls, a contract can be placed in real jeopardy," LSUK compliance and performance manager, Amanda Tomlinson, explained.
"However, The AA team were extremely impressed when they visited the branches and we have received a strong report thanks to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved."
In fact, The AA's quality assurance manager, Mark Braham, singled out Bristol branch - one of the 13 outlets that was visited by the auditors - for specific praise.
He said: "I would like to congratulate Bristol because the staff there were very professional, informative and really enthusiastic about the LSUK/AA partnership during the supplier audit. Also to support this, not one patrol had a bad word to say about the site. It really is a credit to the LSUK organisation."

LSUK teams up with In Phase International
Leading car audio supplier recruited to give branch network extra business dimension
LSUK has moved to strengthen its in-car technology capabilities by teaming up with In phase International Ltd, the UK's largest independent supplier of car audio products.
All 53 branches in the LSUK network are set-up to supply - and in most cases install - a wide selection of vehicle 'add-ons' and In phase will play a vital role in the supply of all audio, satellite navigation, CD and blue tooth technology products to the company. Based in Nottingham, In phase operates out of a 100,000 sq ft distribution centre and supplies brands that include Panasonic, Kenwood, Sony and My Guide to name a few.
"We're geared up to take LSUK's car audio to the next level and that's what we'll be aiming to do," said In phase director, Gary Digva. "The LSUK branch network is vast but we will be working hard to see what we can do to help every outlet sell more and make car audio a bigger part of the overall business."
LSUK is well known in the aftermarket as a leading supplier of quality parts, consumables and technical expertise to large organisations like The AA. But commercial director, Shaun Darke, believes product diversification is an important ingredient when it comes to taking the company forward and becoming more competitive in all areas.
"The company is essentially a successful network of factors but we are trying to go much further than just offering the products that you would expect from that type of business," he said. "Our activities cross over into various industries and stepping up our car audio and associated equipment capabilities is another important step towards meeting the varied needs of our extensive customer base."

LSUK develops its IT network
New business-specific software supplier to enhance efficiency and service to customers
LSUK has revealed it is overhauling its entire internal and customer-facing IT system in a move that has commanded a significant six-figure investment from the
Sheffield-based company.
The national parts and technical expertise supplier operates a network of 53 branches across the UK and has appointed business-specific software supplier, Infor, to provide a versatile platform to replace its existing trade counter, workshop and internal IT systems.
The process of implementing Infor's 'Distribution Essentials' IT solution has already started and the system will be ready for launch early in 2008.
With arguably the biggest aftermarket supply contract - providing all of the parts, tools, equipment and essentials that can be found on The AA's 2400-strong fleet of recovery vehicles - on its books, LSUK is committed to taking whatever steps are necessary to improve the service that it provides. Introducing a brand-new IT system is central to meeting that objective.
"LSUK has undergone a number of changes during the last 12 months to increase efficiency and give customers an unrivalled service. Overhauling our IT system is a vital development and the key attractions of the Infor system is its functionality which really suits our business and having the ability to integrate other software such as document management and VRM," explained Jessica Kemp, LSUK's systems and procedures manager.
"Other qualities of the system are being able to see the visibility of stock across all the branches and its rich purchasing functionality. Customers and staff will notice an improvement across the board and everyone will benefit."

LSUK's branch network has been expanded to 53 outlets following the official opening of its new South Mimms operation.
The branch is in a prime location in North London and sits on the edge of South Mimms Services - a bustling service area that serves the M25 and A1 motorways.
The branch will carry a full compliment of LSUK products, as well as a large stock of parts and consumables that are required by The AA as part of its supply contract with LSUK.
"There is lots of potential for South Mimms because of its excellent location," said LSUK commercial director, Shaun Darke. "In terms of continuing to provide an excellent service to The AA, we'll be right on the doorstep of a lot of patrols and I'm sure they already value the fact that they can get parts from an outlet that is 200 yards away from the M25 and less than two miles from the M1."
The decision to open a brand-new branch at South Mimms is an illustration of the desire to make LSUK even more versatile. The company already boasts an enviable national network of branches, but there is a strong desire within LSUK to expand even further - if the right opportunity comes along.
Darke added: "The branch network we have is already excellent but we're not a company to rest on its laurels. As we've shown with South Mimms, if the opportunity to fill a geographical gap comes along, we will take advantage of it."

LSUK PSV heads to the NEC
Specialist parts and technical skills supplier is gearing up for Coach & Bus Live 2007
LSUK PSV will highlight the service that it provides to many of the UK's leading coach and bus operators when it unveils its latest PSV product directory at the upcoming Coach & Bus Live 2007 that will be held at the NEC from October 10-11.
The company (stand G33) is forging an enviable reputation as a specialist supplier and fitter of parts and accessories to the PSV sector, via its network of 53 branches. Its new
'Top Deck' product directory will be distributed to bus operators at the NEC and details its range of auto-electrical, hard parts, braking components, lighting, filters, rotating electrics, mirrors, reversing aids, batteries, tachograph, switches and speed limiter parts. All parts are available over the counter or within 24 hours.
And in order to slim line the service that it can provide to the coach and bus sector, LSUK PSV has created a vast photographic database of all the popular buses that are used by the national operators. LSUK PSV's national accounts manager, Charlie Miller, has used these photographs to develop a complete product reference library that speeds up product identification and therefore reduces down time for operators.
"Fleet operators are now very specific about their demands from their parts supply partner and, as a company that works in conjunction with some of the biggest companies in the PSV sector, we have shaped our product offering and logistics package around that," said Miller. "Whatever a customer needs - whether it be supply or repair - we have a solution that can be delivered promptly and I'm looking forward to highlighting that fact to visitors at the NEC."
LSUK PSV is the sister company to LSUK, a company that supplies all of the parts, equipment and accessories that are found on the 2400 patrol vehicles that The AA operates on the UK's roads.

September 2007 Communication is key at LSUK
Parts and technical skills supplier embarks on a series of road shows to address its staff
LSUK kicked off a series of regional road shows last week, designed to enhance communication between staff at its Sheffield headquarters, suppliers and those that service the needs of its customers at branch level.
The parts and technical skills supplier has introduced a number of new initiatives to enhance its internal communication and its first wave of road show evenings in Sheffield, Perth, Elstree, Gloucester and Taunton have been hailed a great success.
LSUK commercial director, Shaun Darke, said: "We have a substantial workforce and it's not always easy to keep people at different levels of the business fully up to speed with what we're doing and where we're going. We're making good progress across the whole company and we want to see that continue."
The recent Elstree road show - held at the Holiday Inn hotel - attracted an audience of 50 people from numerous branches in the South East and staff a selection of LSUK directors and managers gave updates on business performance, product developments, the latest on the large national accounts portfolio and HR developments. Three crucial suppliers to LSUK also supported the road show: Vision Alert, Energy Batteries and Tetrosyl.
Medway branch manager, Daljit Bining, took a lot of positives from the road show and believes this kind of initiative will stand LSUK in good stead.
" I found the whole evening very informative and I've now got a much better idea of where the business is going and the opportunities that are available to a branch like mine, be it the servicing of national accounts or general product information. Communication is a two-way street and I valued the opportunity to ask questions. This will help us all move forward."

As a prominent customer, LSUK will also have full access to the entire range of products in the Tetrosyl portfolio.

specialised - this kind of relationship is vital," said LSUK commercial director, Shaun Darke.
Tetrosyl has been appointed by LSUK after coming out on top in a competitive tender process. The Lancashire-based company replaces Comma as its sole oil and chemical supplier.
Tetrosyl national account controller, Paul Addison, said: "I'm thrilled that LSUK has recognised the value in the service that we can offer and it's excellent news that we have formed a partnership with a company that is clearly making a great impression in various markets. LSUK's ambition clearly matches ours and that should make for a fruitful relationship."

LSUK doubles its diesel capability
Parts and technical expertise supplier invests in new test bench

LSUK opens AA logistics site National parts supplier puts its AA-specific stock under one roof to streamline service
LSUK's new central storage warehouse for equipment that is needed by The AA's roadside patrol fleet is now fully up and running in Leeds.
As part of the company's ongoing commitment to giving the breakdown organisation a slick parts and equipment logistics service, LSUK has created a central equipment warehouse that carries more than 300 lines of products that include tow poles, stickers for vans, repair parts and stationery.
"With this central store of equipment, the AA roadside patrols now only need to make one telephone call to get the bits they need quickly and as part of one order," explained LSUK's AA account director, Steve Cambridge.
"Establishing a one-stop-shop is all part of the ongoing drive to integrate systems, give The AA a cost saving and create a more rounded service that makes life easier for the patrols."
The AA current has a fleet of more than 2000 patrol vehicles and LSUK's parts supply deal - one of the largest in the UK aftermarket - means the Sheffield-based company is solely responsible for providing all of the tools and equipment that each patrol routinely carries and uses to keep its members on the move.

Protech unveils new V-Top diagnostic scan tool
Cutting edge machine aims to take diagnostic capabilities to a new level
Protech Automotive UK, a leading supplier of premium-quality equipment to garages and MOT stations, has unveiled the next generation in diagnostic scan tool equipment, the V-Top.
The Walsall-based company has been the exclusive UK importer of Protech products - all manufactured to market-leading standards in Italy - for the last 15 years. V-Top has been designed to revolutionise the diagnostic field and is arguably the most capable tool on the UK market.
Whereas some rival products can only communicate with a select number of vehicles, the standard software on V-Top is fully conversant with ECUs on vehicles built by at least 31 major European car manufacturers and around 11 manufacturers from Japan and Korea.
This level of communication opens up a raft of new diagnostic opportunities for technicians, enabling them to interrogate ABS, SRS, EBD, emissions and many other systems, dependant on ECU type. Running on a Windows XP platform, V-Top also runs Protech's innovative 'Genie' software that enables the operator to run various programs at the same time, via a full colour touch-screen monitor.
"The V-Top has been developed using all of the expertise that Protech has accumulated over many years at the top of its sector, and we are expecting it to revolutionise diagnostic capabilities," said Protech Automotive UK general manager, Chris Grimm. "Its communication range is second to none and with software to guide you through every step of the diagnostics process, it couldn't be easier to use."
And the technical support and after sales service that Protech is offering with the
V-Top is second to none. Each tool comes with a one-day diagnostic training course, the back-up of a network of nationwide repair engineers, and six-months access to a dedicated technical helpline, manned by independent diagnostic experts.
As well as supplying diagnostics equipment, Protech Automotive UK - a subsidiary of LSUK, the aftermarket's largest distributor of auto electrical and diesel components/service - is a trusted supplier of general garage equipment, emissions testing machines and air conditioning service stations.

As the largest independent parts and technical service network in the automotive, CV, PSV and plant sectors, LSUK has a big presence in the UK battery market - estimated to be worth £120 million in retail sales per year - and has appointed Appleton to oversee its continued growth in the sector.
Appleton has worked for a number of high-profile companies in the aftermarket during her career and has spent seven years working in the CV sector. She joins LSUK from Bullwell Ltd.

LSUK staff have a lucky escape
Rising flood waters force workforce to evacuate company's Sheffield headquarters
Staff at LSUK's Sheffield headquarters had a lucky escape this week when they were forced to evacuate their offices amid fears they would be engulfed by flood waters in the Yorkshire city.
Heavy rain meant the River Don - a main waterway that runs through
Sheffield - burst its banks at around lunchtime on Tuesday. And as a torrent of water quickly gathered momentum through the main industrial area of the city, Police ordered all of LSUK's staff to leave their Attercliffe Road headquarters immediately.
"It was quite a frightening experience," said LSUK commercial director, Shaun Darke. "We'd been watching the water levels steadily rising for much of the morning but when the River Don burst its banks, there was literally a flood of water flowing past the front door at close to 40mph.
"To see between six and seven feet of water flowing down the main road that we'd all used to drive into work that morning was unbelievable and we were all relieved to get out of the building and to safety in the end."
Luckily for LSUK, it's network of 52 branches was largely unaffected by the temporary closure of its Sheffield headquarters, and the company was still able to meet the parts and technical supply needs of its customers on a national scale.
And although the company's Sheffield branch was disabled, staff still managed to battle through the floods to deliver replacement starters and alternators to one of LSUK prominent PSV customers, whose Sheffield fleet was decimated by water
damage - therefore helping to keep the city's skeleton transport network up and running in the most challenging conditions.
With Sheffield's flood waters now subsiding, Darke and his team have already kicked a large clean-up operation into action.
"There is some flood damage inside the building but we are all expecting to be back in our offices by the end of this week," Darke added. "If our branches weren't geared up to act independently, it could have a been a costly event. But thankfully that wasn't the case and it's very much business as usual."
As a supplier of parts and technical expertise to the automotive, CV, PSV and plant sectors, LSUK currently holds more than 100 national accounts with some of the biggest names in business, including; The AA, Stagecoach, British Nuclear Fuels and Hewden Group.

LSUK hosts golf day
Customers and suppliers gather at picturesque country hotel
LSUK, a prominent supplier of parts and technical expertise into the automotive, CV, PSV and plant sectors, hosted a golf tournament and evening dinner for nearly 60 of its key customers and suppliers last week.
The event was held at the Welcombe Hotel Spa and Golf Club near Stratford-upon-Avon and was attended by representatives from a number of businesses associated with LSUK including: The AA, Hewden Group, Energy Batteries, Meteor Parking, Manchester Airport, Vision Alert, DEB, Stagecoach, Barloworld and Adroit.
Forty guests took part in a golf tournament on Welcombe's 18-hole course that once formed part of the European Seniors Tour calendar. After this tournament, LSUK officials and guests retired to one of the Welcombe's function suites to enjoy dinner and award prizes for performances on the golf course. Jamie Brooks of Stagecoach Peterborough was the top performer on the day and won a digital camcorder for his efforts.
LSUK commercial director, Shaun Darke, said: "This was the first time we have ever hosted a customer and supplier day like this but it has undoubtedly been a success and we will definitely do it again in the future."

LSUK enjoys great success at SED 2007
LSUK was one of the star exhibitors at last month's SED Show 2007, the UK's number one exhibition for the plant and construction industries.
The three-day event was held in the grounds of the Rockingham Motor Speedway complex in Corby and LSUK lined up alongside some of the biggest names in the sector when it comes to the supply of plant/construction machinery and associated equipment.
LSUK head of business development, Nigel Rodgers, said: "As a company, we are stronger than we've ever been when it comes to looking after key national accounts and serving up logistical solutions that are the envy of our rivals.
"Attending SED was part of our strategy to show the plant and construction sectors what our national capabilities are in terms of quickly supplying parts and technical expertise through our network of 52 branches."
Rodgers and his recently-expanded national accounts team have branded SED 2007 a huge success and are looking forward to meeting the needs of new customers in the plant and construction sectors.
"We fielded a massive number of enquiries from potential customers at SED and the feeling was very positive on all sides," Rodgers added. "I'm sure our exposure at the show will prove instrumental in us gaining new business and adding even more Blue Chip companies to our growing list of national account customers."

MI Diesel unveils filter assembly range
Specialist company starts manufacturing units to any specification
MI Diesel, a specialist re-manufacturer of diesel injection pumps and a supplier of associated components and accessories, has just unveiled a programme under which it will assemble and manufacture diesel filter assemblies for the UK aftermarket.
Until now, only the most common filter assemblies have been available through the bigger manufacturers in the thriving sector. But the Lancashire-based company has spotted a gap in the market and is now manufacturing filter assembly units to any design and specification.
MI Diesel only assembles its units using OE-quality filters and the brand selection is entirely at the discretion of the customer - whether it be Bosch, Delphi or Crosland.
Units are available in singles or in bulk order and MI Diesel has the capability to despatch bespoke orders within the same day.
MI Diesel general manager, Phil Handley, said: "As a supplier of almost the entire range of aftermarket diesel components, we have all the parts in stock already, so offering a range of bespoke filter assembly units is a logical step for us.
"There are thousands of variations of filter assemblies out there - imperial, metric, with the fuel fed from the right and with the fuel fed from the left, to name a
few examples - but we can meet the needs of the customer by designing and manufacturing assemblies to any specification quickly and to a high standard."
As well as the automotive aftermarket, MI Diesel's filter assembly capabilities spread in to numerous other sectors including commercial vehicle (CV), public service vehicle (PSV), plant, marine and construction.

Company to show off its impressive national parts and technical supply capabilities
LSUK has announced that it will use next month's SED 2007 show in Corby to highlight its impressive capabilities when it comes to supplying replacement plant parts and technical expertise on a national scale.

"We're excited about going to the SED show because our network of 52 branches can not only supply a raft of products over the counter or within 24 hours, but we also have a team of highly-skilled technicians around the UK that can fit parts and accessories where necessary.
"I'm sure people will be impressed by what we have to offer the plant sector and we will be only too pleased to answer questions and hopefully serve up logistical solutions that are the envy of our competitors."

LSUK makes £2.5 million vehicle investment
Company equips its staff with a brand-new fleet of Citroën C5 cars
LSUK , the largest independent supplier of premium components in to the automotive aftermarket through its network of 52 repair centres, has just invested more than £2.5 million in a 120-strong fleet of brand-new cars.
Updating the Sheffield-based company's entire fleet is regarded as another significant landmark in LSUK's successful development during the last few years.
Since the company was the subject of a management buyout in 2001, the LSUK business has gone from strength-to-strength and the company now boasts a national accounts portfolio of more than 100 customers.
Having just finalised a deal with Caledonia Citroën of Chester for its new vehicles, LSUK has just started taking delivery of its new fleet. The company has ordered 120 Citroën C5s for its national accounts team and other key personnel around the UK. The company is also currently pushing ahead with plans to update its fleet of vans. This deal will be finalised shortly.
LSUK commercial director, Shaun Darke, said: "Making an investment like this that is worth in excess of £2.5 million is another clear sign that LSUK is moving in the right direction as a business and that we are prepared to invest in our future by ordering what I believe is one of the biggest and best company fleets in the business.
"We are dedicated to providing our customers with the best products and services, so it's only right that we have a suitable fleet of company and delivery vehicles that reflects that commitment."

LSUK targets major national accounts growth
Company is aiming to "set the standard" when it comes to national parts supply
LSUK has restructured its national accounts team as part of an aggressive strategy to significantly add to its current haul of more than 100 national accounts and enhance its position as the most successful team in its sector.
The Sheffield-based company has been recognised as one of the leading suppliers of parts and technical expertise in to the UK aftermarket and its network of 52 branches have been instrumental in it winning parts supply contracts with some of the biggest names in UK business.
The current LSUK national accounts roll of honour includes The AA, Stagecoach, The Ministry of Defence, JCB, Speedy Group PLC, A-Plant and Hewden. But LSUK officials are keen to add to this growing portfolio and have therefore taken steps to re-launch the company's national accounts department.
"LSUK is stronger than it's ever been when it comes to its national accounts and we've pulled off some tremendous coups in recent times to the point where we are now the most successful team in our sector," explained LSUK's head of business development, Nigel Rodgers. "To maintain this position, we needed to implement a structure where we are all pulling in the same direction and can meet the needs of our customers with enhanced efficiency and confidence."
With this target in mind, Rodgers and his team have expanded the LSUK national accounts team and brought together a team of experienced Sales Development Managers (SDM) that each have strict regional responsibilities and can bring greater focus to the way LSUK services its national accounts customers.
Rodgers is also keen to see LSUK's branch managers and representatives take an even more proactive role in the national accounts business and has instructed his SDM's to take branch managers to see customers (national account outlets) in person and build up strong local relationships and, above all, a trust that rarely exist between other suppliers and their customers.
"Nobody has the expertise that we have and we want to capitalise on that going forwards," Rodgers added. "We're not going to leave any stone unturned when it comes to finding new contracts and my message to anyone that operates a large fleet of vehicles, is 'look out, because LSUK is coming to get your parts supply business'."

LSUK swells its national accounts team
Continued growth prompts trusted parts supplier to add to its skilled management team
LSUK has reacted to the increasing demands of its expanding national accounts portfolio - which currently stands at more than 100 contracts - by appointing two new faces to its national accounts team.
Joining the Sheffield-based company as a key accounts manager is Kevin Tomkins, while Jane Currie will fill an identical position after being selected for internal promotion.
Tomkins moves to LSUK after spending the last four years working as a business coach. Before this, he worked as a sales and marketing manager for SDL and also accumulated some valuable experience as a national accounts manager at Bosal.
Currie also brings a wealth of experience to the expanding LSUK national accounts department. Having worked in the motor industry for 25 years, she moved to LSUK four years ago as a sales development manager for national accounts. When LSUK was awarded its current AA contract, Currie then moved to manage the account in the north.
LSUK has recently made a number of impressive national account gains that have included taking on Stagecoach Group as the supplier of its rotating electrics components and also providing Wolverhampton City Council with the workshop parts that it needs to keep its extensive fleet of vehicles on the road.
Business development manager, Nigel Rodgers, sees the appointments of Tomkins and Currie as being integral to LSUK continuing to manage its national accounts portfolio effectively and give its customers the attention they deserve.
He said: "Our list of national account customers is growing all the time and we pride ourselves on having the right people on the ground to react to customers' demands and to make sure we're giving them the high standard of service they require.
"Kevin and Jane are very skilled in the national accounts field and I know they are bringing a great deal of experience and will compliment the team that we've already got in place. We want to be the company that sets the standard in our industry for national accounts and Kevin and Jane will be instrumental in making sure we maintain that position."

LSUK adds to its senior management team
Company appoints new head of procurement and product management
LSUK, the automotive aftermarket's largest distributor of batteries, auto-electrical parts and other premium components, has recruited Brian Wilson as its new head of procurement and product management.
The Sheffield-based company has been busy adding to its senior management team in recent months and Wilson's appointment marks another key step in this ongoing process.
Wilson, a graduate materials engineer, will be responsible for range management, profitability, stock profiling and stock availability. He will have close contact with each of LSUK's 52 branches to ensure they are meeting the needs of their customers.
The 42-year-old arrives at LSUK from Wedgwood - the Staffordshire-based fine china manufacturer - where he had several roles, including head of sourcing and quality for non-ceramic products and most recently the head of procurement. Prior to that, Wilson worked for Alfred Dunhill as its head of product technology for engineered goods.
Wilson said he is relishing his new role at one of the aftermarket's fastest-growing companies.
"LSUK has undergone a number of senior management changes in the last few months and it excites me that I'm joining such an experienced and focussed team," he commented. "There is definitely a good feeling at the company and everyone is very clear about what needs to be done to make the company a success."
LSUK commercial director, Shaun Darke, said Wilson's appointment is all part of an aggressive development strategy for 2007.
"We've made huge strides in the last year to develop the business and win some key national accounts, but we want to take things further than that. The next 12 months will be centred about delivering first-class customer service through increased product availability and improved ranges, as we focus on being the number one in our sector. Brian's appointment is integral to meeting that target."

LSUK wins local authority contract
Specialist parts and technical supplier teams up with Wolverhampton City Council
LSUK has swelled its tally of national account contracts to more than 100 after being chosen by Wolverhampton City Council to supply all of the workshop parts that it needs to keep its varied fleet of vehicles on the road. The agreement will initially last for three years.
As the UK's single largest supplier of premium-quality aftermarket parts and technical expertise, LSUK has 52 branches around the UK that are fully-equipped to supply a raft of vehicle, CV and PSV components over the counter or in less than 24 hours.
Being awarded its latest national account by Wolverhampton City Council is another illustration of LSUK's logistical strengths being recognised by organisations that cannot afford to have their vehicles out of action. Wolverhampton City Council joins a list that includes the AA, BT and the Ministry of Defence in choosing LSUK as its parts supply partner.
"We put a lot of time and effort in to making sure we have a logistics system that is slick and effective and winning another significant contract like this is testimony to the success of that process," said LSUK business development manager, Nigel Rodgers.
"It is always LSUK's objective to give its customers the same high-quality service that they deliver as standard and Wolverhampton City Council will be no different."
Based in Sheffield, LSUK is a supplier of numerous vehicle parts. These include braking components, batteries, alternators, starters, electrical components, consumables, filters, rotating electrics, lighting, steering and diesel components.
